Abstract:
Industrial small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are going through digital transformation and at the same time have to develop sustainably, yet in management practice these two tasks are usually handled separately. Digital projects are chosen from ready-made market solutions, while sustainability targets are set without checking whether the enterprise has a digital basis for reaching them. The aim of the article is to develop a conceptual model for managing the sustainable development of industrial SMEs in which the sustainability management loop and the digital transformation management loop are linked quantitatively. The scientific novelty is that the link between the loops is set by a coupling matrix of seven sustainability dimensions and eight digital maturity components. The matrix is used to calculate the digital support of each dimension, the coefficient of digital-to-sustainability conversion, the conversion gap and the development priority of each component. The methodological basis includes the systems and process approaches, quality function deployment, the analytic hierarchy process, Kendall’s coefficient of concordance and normalization of indicators by level thresholds. As a result, a six-block model has been built, a rule for setting targets by dimension with regard to digital support has been formulated, and the calculation procedure has been shown on an illustrative example. The example shows that an enterprise with medium overall digital maturity may have low maturity precisely in the components on which its sustainability depends. In that case, projects in resource accounting and production digitalization should come first, ahead of sales. The practical significance is that the model gives the manager a justified sequence of digital investments under limited resources. Further research involves expert assessment of the coupling matrix and testing the model on data from industrial enterprises.
